Alaska may have the one of the smallest populations in the US (Wyoming takes the #1 spot), but that does not mean there is a lack of design talent. The work of these Alaskan designers is elegant in their simplicity, but there was something else that I can’t quite describe. It is as if under the stoic, practical surface, there is something is dark and brooding. Then again, this could just be me.
Thanks to Laura of inaeent for introducing me to the artwork of Karinna Gomez. I have done printmaking before and it is a medium that I especially enjoy, so it was wonderful to see her work. I also loved the minimal, natural, and practical work from Gold Heart Supply and Great Land Woodworking; a desk organizer out of a block of solid wood and a candle holder made from a section of Alaskan birch. Of course, as always, there is a lot of jewelry, which ranged from delicate to bold to just a little weird. I hope you enjoy all the work, and if you think I missed someone, please leave a comment.
